We Build Strong Body & Minds!

About Tai Chi for Health Kung fu Academy

Our motto is that we will teach anybody who is sincere in learning the art of Kung Fu, You are welcome to come and watch a class if you wish.

Importantly, learning Kung Fu is a very personal journey, with each student we will approach differently. Some will be more interested in forms, others in self-defense.

Classes are designed to provide you with a very complete workout for both body and mind.

We Teach Values:

Respect : Leadership : Goal Setting : Self Discipline : Responsibility:

Breakdown of a Typical Class

Start – students will line up and salute the instructor.

Warm-up, including cardiovascular routines, body conditioning, and thorough stretching routines – take it at your own pace!

Practice of traditional stances and hand/leg techniques.

Warm-down and Stretching is a part of our class.

We will typically have water breaks during class as well, to ensure everyone stays properly hydrated!

 The fundamentals include:

This is where you will learn the fundamentals of Internal Martial Arts.

The fundamentals are very important in that it is the key to learning and understanding the more advanced movements. Basic motions of the hands, feet, and legs. Combined motions of the feet and leg, which are used for balancing. Flexibility of the shoulders and arms, the waist, and the legs. During this time you will practice conditioning and strengthening techniques.

Fitness

Kung fu training is one of the most complete ways of getting in shape.

We use a combination of traditional kung fu training techniques along with more “Western” exercises such as Martial Fitness Kick Boxing, sit-ups, squats, or bodyweight exercises (including using your partner’s bodyweight!)

Kung fu covers all the bases: cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, strength, and mind/body connection. Kung fu training is serious physical training, so if you have any doubts or any medical conditions, please get a green light from your doctor or come speak to the instructor.

Self-Defense

We focus on control techniques using joint locks or strikes to vital areas.

These techniques are particularly useful as they teach students to work around differences in size, reach, or weight, and effectively control bigger or stronger attackers.

We also cover evasive techniques from specific holds and locks, as well as defense against basic weapons.

We always teach new techniques using slow and simple movements. Our self-defense training is based on simple and highly effective moves covering a broad range of attacks.

Self-defense – practical defense techniques against specific kinds of attacks, with emphasis on weaponless, and efficient parries against grabs, chokes, etc.against small weapons, e.g. knives, bats.
Sparring– because combat application remains an important part of Kung Fu , we will regularly engage in light controlled sparring. The goal here is to (defend and attack in a “live” situation.)
